Koi, more specifically Nishikigoi, are ornamental, colored or patterned carp, which arose by spontaneous genetic mutation of common carp (gray carp) in the Niigata region (Japan) and which in the period 1804 and 1829 were multiplied by fish farmers in the region that they perfected their characteristics, obtaining three hybrid types: the Higoi (red carp), the Asagui (blue and red carp) and the Bekko (white and black).
