At the end of the Canyonlands National Park, Island in the Sky there's a point called Grand View overlook. This point brings you to the end of the mesa, where the land drops 1,000 vertical feet down into the land of the Canyons. It was my first solo trip ever traveling here, I pulled into a parking late at night and at 5:00am I got up to catch that beautiful morning glow on the orange Utah rocks. I drove out to Grand View Point where I was the first car in the lot, hiked about a mile until I got to the cliff edge where I felt inspired to make this piece. During dusk I set up composition, with the la Sals and the Green River canyon in the background and me with the 1,000 foot cliff as the foreground/subject. Drinking my matê, I waited for about a hour for the winter sun to rise over the horizon, sitting, observing. My thoughts kept drifting to that feeling of being alone and how scary it is, but at the same time I was thinking about how much this landscape looked like Arrakis from the book Dune. The Bene Gesserit phrase that was on my phone lock screen at the time kept popping into my head "I must not fear, fear is the mind killer" a mantra I used to calm me down from those fearful thoughts. And then the sun broke the tension of the sky and the light touched my face. The time was now, I turned on the burst mode and self timer and sprinted along the side of the canyon wall to where this ideal overlook was for this shot. I must have run back in forth, five or six times before I got just the right one of me peering over the edge. When I saw that I had successfully managed to sprint to spot just in time, I was excited to see my how my soul and feelings had been captured into this image. The ideal image for me to never forget the feeling of  Desert Solitude.
